Customize Your Profits

Many companies look at customization as an expense. A choice between generic packaging and custom packaging with your logo. What if I told you that there is a way for you to turn your customization expense, into profits?

First, aside from a few iconic brands like Coca Cola, Disney, and Apple, the number one brand is the brand of your customer. That’s right, their name. People love their name, their logo, their image, and their slogan. People love themselves so much; they are willing to pay extra for it.

From coffee to golf balls, the ability to customize your product line adds value for the customer. After all, your name and likeness is priceless. So how do you offer your clients customization?

  1. Determine whether or not you can provide this service in-house or if you need to outsource this program. There is nothing wrong with outsourcing the customization of your products. Most customers know that if they want their name, logo, or personal image on a product this will cost additional dollars and will take additional time to complete the order.

  2. Limit your customer’s choices. This may seem counter intuitive, but when you understand that there are infinite ways to customize a product, the last thing you want is paralysis of analysis. Give your customers a few popular ideas on how they can customize the product and then give them an “other” option.

  3. Determine the price for customization. Just like any other product or serve, find out what your cost will be to offer this service to your customer. Determine whether or not this cost will be a pass thru cost or if it will be a profit center for your company. Either way, you should not lose money by providing customization for your customers.

If your ultimate goal in providing customization to your clients is to sell more products, then the cost of customization can be offered as a pass through expense in order to entice your customers to buy more. However, customization can also be offered as a profit center for your business because as mentioned above, people are willing to pay more for their own name and likeness.
